Club del libro italiano - Ardesia, 3rd September, 8pm
Join us for our first ever Italian language book club at Night Owl Books on Thursday, 3rd September, at 8pm.
We'll be meeting in a small group to discuss the novel Ardesia by Ruska Jorjoliani - in italiano!

Tornare nel paese in cui si è cresciuti comporta quasi sempre uno scavo nei ricordi. A maggior ragione se, una volta arrivati, capita di assistere alla traslazione dei resti di un proprio antenato. È quello che accade alla protagonista di Ardesia, che racconta il suo ritorno a Mestia, in Georgia, dove suo malgrado partecipa alla riesumazione del bisnonno, il quale, al termine di una vita avventurosa, fu sepolto in un punto non ben identificato del terreno di famiglia. Per la narratrice inizia così un nuovo viaggio, tra digressioni e rivelazioni, che si compie mentre l’escavatore rovescia zolle, smuove lastre di ardesia e ossa, insieme a frammenti di memoria.
Con lo sguardo di chi vive tra due mondi, Jorjoliani descrive la terra di origine, con le sue tradizioni e i suoi paradossi: una terra che sembra cercare un equilibrio tra le turbolenze del cambiamento e il peso di un passato che riaffiora senza preavviso.
Ruska Jorjoliani è nata a Mestia (Georgia) nel 1985 e dal 2007 vive a Palermo. Nel 2015 ha esordito con il romanzo La tua presenza è come una città (Corrimano), scritto in italiano, tradotto in tedesco e vincitore di numerosi premi. Nel 2020 è uscito il suo secondo romanzo, Tre vivi, tre morti (Voland). Ha inoltre tradotto Nodar Dumbadze, Nana Ekvtimishvili e Iva Pezuashvili dal georgiano e Daur Nachkebia dal russo.

- What level of Italian is the book suitable for?
I'd recommend the book for anyone with around A-Level experience of the Italian language. We'll try to stick to speaking in Italian throughout the book club where possible, but the aim of the group is to provide a supportive space in which to enjoy reading and practising speaking in Italian - and the question 'come si dice in italiano...' is very much welcome!
